INTRODUCTION TO ROCK CLIMBING
If you've gotten a taste of climbing and are now interested in pursuing it, this class is for you! Build a solid foundation of climbing knowledge that thoroughly covers information you'll utilize anywhere you climb. In this class, After this class, you will be a confident and knowledgeable climber with a solid foundation to build upon.
Who should take this class?
Those who are interested in climbing more regularly and who want to pursue this sport safely and knowledgeably. Skill levels can range from someone who has never climbed before to someone who has been climbing for a while but with limited knowledge of climbing safety. This class is also a prerequisite to the Lead Climbing class. Those interested in taking the Lead Climbing class who feel they have the Intro to Rock Climbing class knowledge may test out by demonstrating their abilities. Please inquire about test out dates and times.
INTERMEDIATE TECHNIQUE
Are you hitting a "wall" with your climbing and want to get to that next level? Do you want to learn how to read routes better? Are you finding that your arms get too tired? Or do you want to learn ways to get stronger or how to move more gracefully on the rock? The Intermediate Technique class can help you. Building upon the techniques taught in the Intro to Rock Climbing class, you will learn how to conserve energy and utilize your holds more effectively, gain confidence in friction and foot placements, understand how to control your balance, learn how to rest while climbing, maximize your reach in single movements, and try some training exercises to improve your strength.
Who should take this class?
Ideally, for those who climb 5.8 to 5.10+, but those who climb 5.6 to 5.7 will still gain quite a bit of technique that will help them conserve their energy and advance to the next level. This class is also recommended to those who aspire to take the Lead class, since lead climbing requires balance and controlled movement.
INTRODUCTION TO INDOOR LEAD CLIMBING
Learn what it means to be on the "sharp end of the rope." This is an introduction to INDOOR "sport" lead climbing. You will learn proper lead belaying and clipping techniques, belayer-climber communication, and numerous safety issues for both climber and belayer. You must be able to top rope climb ANY 5.9 in the gym in a controlled style, on demand of the climbing instructor. To pass this class, you will need to convince the climbing instructor of your capabilities and will be tested by lead climbing with no mistakes, belaying a lead climber with no mistakes, performing safety checks, demonstrating your ability to identify certain dangers, taking lead falls and catching lead falls, and efficiently managing the lead rope.
Who should take this class?
Those interested in learning how to safely lead indoors. The Introduction to Rock Climbing class is a prerequisite to the Lead Climbing class and must be taken within 3 months of the Lead Climbing Class. Those who feel they have the Intro to Rock Climbing class knowledge may test out by demonstrating their abilities. A $35 deposit is required to test out. If the climber passes, they get the deposit back and skip straight to the Lead class. However, if they do not pass they can either choose to put their deposit toward the Intro class, or AZR keeps it and donates it to the Access Fund. Please inquire about scheduled test out days and times.
YOUTH BELAY CERTIFICATION CLASS
This class will cover much of the same material as the adult Intro to Rock Climbing class, but will emphasize belay technique, gym rules, etiquette, and safety. It is one hour less (in total) than the adult Intro class and is not intended to cover basic climbing technique.
